Smiths Station Ruritan Club's History
Smiths Station Ruritan is the oldest, most enduring civic organization in our community. The club was chartered in 1952 with 52 charter members. The meetings were held at Smiths Station High School until 1998 when the Ruritan Community Center was constructed at 2000 Lee Road 430.
In the early days of Ruritan, the aroma of BBQ filled the air above Smiths Station once a year in May. The fundraiser was a great success in its heyday because everyone in the community was involved. There were those who cooked and chopped and stirred all night just so the rest of the hometown folks could enjoy great BBQ.
Our community and club have changed a lot since those early days of Ruritan. The population has increased tremendously, we are a city now with a traffic light, and women are Ruritan members and leaders along side the men.
But there is one thing that remains the same... Ruritan's dedication to the community of Smiths Station.
